The Striezelmarkt is the oldest Christmas market in Germany, and has been held on the Altmarkt since 1434. It owes its name to the Dresden Christmas stollen, known locally as Striezel.

Around 1548, the market was held only on the Monday before Christmas, which is why it was nicknamed Striezel Monday. Due to the positive response, however, the market was later extended from the Monday before Christmas to Christmas Eve.

The permission of sales by foreign traders from numerous Saxon towns increased the versatility of the market. From 1600 onwards, goods from the Erzgebirge and Upper Lusatia were on sale, and by 1800 the Striezelmarkt was already one of the most important markets in Germany.

Today, the Striezelmarkt is one of the most popular Christmas markets. Hundreds of traders and showmen create a unique atmosphere, numerous events get people in the mood for the upcoming Christmas season and light up the eyes of young and old.
