The Neumarkt, probably the best-known square in Dresden’s city center, is being gradually reconstructed in accordance with its former magnificent Baroque design. The new development aims to reconstruct the historic buildings. With the Neumarkt, Dresden is getting its new old city center back.

Only since 1548 did the area of the Neumarkt belong to Dresden. During the Renaissance period, the square developed its structure and special charm, which was particularly characterized by the typical gabled houses. The Neumarkt matured into a work of art with the progressive construction activity in the early Baroque period. The Seven Years’ War from 1756 to 1763 heavily damaged the area. The square was rebuilt in a simpler style in the late Baroque style. With the construction of the Frauenkirche from 1726 -1743 by George Bähr, the area grew together more strongly and for the first time symbolized a unity.

In the following years, the square was hardly changed but witnessed numerous conflicts such as revolutionary barricade fighting in May 1849 and destructive attacks in World War II. The ruins of the Frauenkirche and the Neumarkt, which is next to Altmarkt the most important inner-city square, remained untouched for many years and served as a memorial. The consecration of the Frauenkirche on October 30, 2005 breathed new life into the Neumarkt. Since then, numerous former quarters have been rebuilt according to old patterns and thus create a mixture of tradition and modernity. The noble buildings with their faithfully reconstructed facades invite you to stroll, shop and dine in historical flair.
Transport connection: tram 1, 2, 4 till Altmarkt
